LONDON — The first image has been released of “Remainder” (above), which was penned and is being helmed by visual artist Omer Fast. Pic, which stars Tom Sturridge, is being sold by The Match Factory.
Pic shoots over six weeks on location in London and Berlin this spring, and post-production will take place in Hamburg.
The story, which is based on Tom McCarthy’s novel, follows a young man who tries to reconstruct his past out of fragmented memories. His obsessive efforts are funded by a large financial settlement for an accident he cannot remember, but neither his friends nor he can anticipate the extremes he will go to in realizing his quest.
Fast said the film is “an elliptical thriller about a person whose past catches up with him when he’s most vulnerable: in absolute control.”
“Remainder” is produced by Natasha Dack of Tigerlily Films, in co-production with Malte Grunert of Amusement Park Film and ZDF/Arte.
Key financiers are the British Film Institute in the U.K. and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and Filmfoerderung Hamburg Schleswigholstein in Germany, with additional support from Soda Film + Art, and a consortium of collectors from the art world.
Piffl Medien will release the pic in Germany and Soda Pictures has distribution rights for the U.K. and Ireland.

Fast has works in the permanent collections of such major institutions as Tate Modern and LACMA. He has exhibited widely around the world, including the Guggenheim, Whitney Museum, Centre Pompidou and as part of the Venice Biennale and Documenta.
Sturridge began his career in Mira Nair’s “Vanity Fair” alongside Reese Witherspoon, before going on to star in “Being Julia” with Annette Bening and Michael Gambon. A leading role followed in Gregory J. Read’s “Like Minds” alongside Toni Collette, and Richard Curtis’ “The Boat That Rocked,” with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Bill Nighy. His credits also include “Junkhearts” and “On the Road.”
Forthcoming roles include the painter John Millais in “Effie,” opposite Dakota Fanning and Emma Thompson, Terrence Malick’s new feature, with Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender, and Troy in Thomas Vinterberg’s “Far From the Madding Crowd,” opposite Carey Mulligan.
Past productions for Tigerlily Films include the Locarno Golden Leopard award-winning “She, A Chinese,” and the Berlinale Caligari prize-winning “37 Uses for a Dead Sheep.”
