Fabulous Fic Rec Friday

WitchyVampireGirl turns up the heat with Mind Over Matter by SubtlePen

I am sure that I can say this with absolute certainty—we all hated the fade to black in Breaking Dawn. I know I did. It was like three and half books of foreplay, angst, and drama, and all we wanted was a little vampire loving. I mean, it was hinted at how things were between Rose and Emmett, so we were all salivating at the prospect of some Edward and Bella smexy times. But then we get the fade and turn the page to find feathers… *huge dramatic sigh*
Thanks goodness for fanfiction!!! *crowd cheers* No, seriously, thank the heavens for fanfiction. It was there for me between the time when I read Breaking Dawn and the movie came out. So, like any good fanfic newbie, I scoured the site for the hottest vamp Edward and human Bella story I could that was dripping with lemons. This is when I fell in love with Mind Over Matter by SubtlePen. I think it was one of the first lemony stories that I read and I have re-read it several times since.
It is set in the time between the end of Eclipse and the start of Breaking Dawn, and we get a unique story of what could have happened during that break. In this wonderfully sexy, loving, sensual, and funny story is a tale of two people in love who are discovering the art, passion, and desire of the flesh and how to make Bella’s desire for a “real" honeymoon happen.
In order to ready them both for that special moment, they realize they need to prepare and they need to practice. Not only does Edward need time to gauge his reactions and learn to temper his strength, but Bella needs to learn how to meet Edward where he is at and help him uncover his sexual needs under his layers of Victorian upbringing.
With a premise such as this, one would expect every chapter to be nothing but lemony goodness in various degrees: kissing, caressing, petting, etc. But you’d be wrong. Don’t worry, there is PLENTY of sexy times, but the author does a wonderful job of weaving their practicing into a story about love and what we are willing to do for those we love. It is a journey of self-exploration. Both Edward and Bella are virgins, and so this story chronicles their sexual maturation.
It’s amazing to watch as Edward grows and, for lack of a better word, blossoms. He literally comes into his sexual nature through the story, so much so that by the end, you feel proud of him for all that he has learned and discovered about himself and Bella. We really get a story about two people deepening an already intense connection.
There are plenty of moments to make you chuckle, because any story where Edward is dealing with sex wouldn’t be complete with his brothers lending a helping hand. Emmett will make you laugh until you cry and you will love the way Jasper can put things in perspective for Edward. Even the ladies get in the action as sisterly guides for Bella, giving her the feminine touch she has lacked over the last few years.
Looking back on this story, I am pleased by the very mature Bella. In fact, I think she is far more mature than the Bella we see in Breaking Dawn. She understands that she has a part to play in all this. She learns that she needs to meet Edward where he is at, and allow things to go at his pace. She listens to what he needs and then gives it to him.
Edward… *dreamy sigh* What can I say? Reading a story where he is learning all about sex is scintillating, steamy, and to quote Heather, “Shower-nozzle masturbation material.” In all seriousness, this Edward—while still retaining some of his usual broodiness—does start to lighten up. So much so that by the end we see an Edward that is very much a man, and you almost forget that he’s a vampire. To read his journey to give the woman he loves her one request before she joins him in forever, will endear you to him even more.
This story does take some very non-canon twists, but it does take us through the honeymoon, allowing us anti-fade-to-black readers to envision the type of honeymoon we wanted from Breaking Dawn. I hope you give this story a read and enjoy it as much as I did.

blueeyedcherry brings you a fic that's sure to send you on an emotional roller coaster ride with  The Drop by lola-pops

2014 will go down as the year of really amazing WIPs in my fanfic date book. When I look at my list of favorites, the first half is sprinkled with some pretty incredible stories that just started posting over the last ten months. Some are completed already and some are still updating, and a few of them have captured my attention to the point that I literally check my email daily in hopes of seeing something from FFN about an update.

The Drop by lola-pops is one of those stories that not only got my attention, but leaves me eagerly awaiting more between each update. Lola has a way with angst—especially teenage into young adulthood angst (coughcoughSUMMER OF SALTcoughcough).

The Drop opens with Bella and her friends having a bonfire and a party on one side of the river that separates the West from the East, the poor from the rich, and, in Bella's case, her new life from her old. There's liquor, there's weed, there's good friends, and there's an undercurrent of teenage angst flowing fast and heavy. For some reason Edward is on the other side of the riverbank, and he's with Angela (dun, dun, dun!). Of course we learn the significance of this in later chapters, but for now it's kinda like a punch in the gut for all those hardcore E&B shippers out there.

The second chapter takes place in the past, and this is the flow of the writing moving forward—present day plotlines in one chapter, backstory in the next. We watch as Bella struggles to find a way to balance old friends and memories with new ones when the two worlds collide. At the same time we learn what happened to bring her to where she is right now, and find out how losing one of, if not the single most important person in her life, has changed her in ways nobody ever dreamed it would.

There is no regular update schedule with this, but I promise you that the wait between chapters is worth it. If you're looking for a story that will give you all the feels and remind you of an age that seemed so much simpler, yet was laced with all that teenage angst is, check out The Drop by lola-pops.

WitchyVampireGirl takes us back in time with Ren Faire by Hismysticmuse

So, on this wonderful Friday I want to take you back to a simpler time.  A time filled with Lords and Ladies, Kings and Queens, Knights and damsels in distress. In other words, let’s go to the Ren Faire. Which, strangely, is the title of today’s Witchy review. Ren Fair by Hismysticmuse is a sweet, adorable little drabble fic that will transport you back to the days of yore.
It starts out with Bella and Alice feeling bored and stuck in their dead end jobs as waitresses in a Forks diner. Feeling the need to get out, discover the world, and escape the tedium of their lives, Bella suggests that they get jobs with the ren faire that will be rolling into town.  The faire happens to be owned by Esme and her family, and she’s recently taken it over. True to Esme fashion, she makes the faire a family thing and soon we hear crowds shouting and waving merrily for King Carlisle and Queen Esme.
We soon discover that Jasper and Emmett are jousting knights, Rosalie is a Lady in Waiting and Edward is the brooding Crown Prince who catches Bella’s eye almost immediately. As Bella and Alice start working and become immersed in the faire, you begin to see that the faire is so much more. It is a culture and family all unto its own. There are rules and customs, some which will leave you laughing. There is togetherness and a comradery that will warm your heart.
As Bella begins to fall for Edward and Alice starts her head first lust-into-love relationship with Jasper, you get to follow the girls' journey into the women they were supposed to be.  Eventually Bella breaks down Edward’s defenses and soon, they too are wrapped up in the romance and fantasy of love at the faire.
It is a heart-warming tale filled with love, romance, laughter, and characters you won’t soon forget. I hope you will get to enjoy it soon.
Happy Friday and until next time, look for the magic in everyday life!

blueeyedcherry pulls out something on the sweet side with Air by Rochelle Allison

Rochelle has been one of my favorite fic authors for quite some time. I love the topics she writes about, I adore the characters she crafts, and I can't say enough good things about her words.

Air is probably my favorite story that she's written, and easily one of my top ten favorite fics. Bella and Edward meet at a BBQ/birthday party for his sister, Kate. She's a college kid, he's ten years older and in a different place in his life. Age isn't the only way these two differ, however. They're very much opposites, however there's this attraction that exists between them and neither of them can deny that much. So, we watch as they embark on journey that will take them to new places, make them each face emotions they haven't before, and ultimately will force them both to think about what it is that they want from life—for themselves as individuals and as a romantic duo.

The Edward from this story is one of my favorites that I've ever read. He's nothing like the picture perfect man so many authors try to paint. He's flawed in numerous way; he's never punctual, he doesn't communicate effectively, he's insecure and sometimes sloppy with things, but man oh man does he love Bella. And even though he struggles to say it at times, his love is evident in the things he does for her and the way he treats her.

This story is about 20 chapters long and the chapters are not very lengthy, so it's both an easy and enjoyable read. If you're looking to add a little sweetness to your current fic dive collection, make sure to put Air on your TBR list.
