Just a little note -- there will be no "Something New" or "Something Blu" recs today. I (blueeyedcherry) am under the weather and as such haven't prepared anything to post.
WitchyVampireGirl presents Goodbye Peter Pan by Bled Dry
It’s been my observation that most of the recent fic
offerings have been all human, alternate universe type of stories. Whether
that’s because they’re easier to write or because all the good vampire themes
have been done and then overdone, I don't know. Whatever the reason, it’s been a long time
since I read a great new vampire story. That’s until I started reading Goodbye
Peter Pan by Bled Dry.
It takes place ten years after Edward left and Alice has a
gut feeling they need to move the family back to Forks. It’s that premise that
is the only true cannon component. The author then gives a brief little glimpse
into what Edward was up to after he left. We learn that he never really left,
instead he checked in on her and tracked Victoria with the help of his
brothers. They’re victorious against her, only for Edward to decide to go back
to Bella. Tracking her throughout the town, he finds her only to discover her
in a compromising position. Assuming that Bella has done exactly what he asked
her to, forget about him and move on, Edward once more leaves.
The story flash forwards and you realize the scene that
caused Edward to leave the second time was nothing like Edward thought.
Instead, we find Bella back at Forks years after leaving to escape the pain.
Charlie’s death brings her back to the one place that held her greatest memories
and her worst nightmares. Through the thoughts of Mike, we find him still
harboring feelings for Bella and determined to win her affections now that
she’s back.
Mike’s patience and determination to ingratiate himself into
Bella’s life are calculating and a bit sad. To the reader, it is painfully
obvious that Bella doesn’t feel for him what he feels for her. But it’s through
that fierce desire for her that Mike in a sense wears Bella down and he gets
what he’s always wanted, her affection. They eventually get married. Don’t
panic, their marriage isn’t the focus of the story.
We learn that over the years, Edward had come and gone only
to get the wrong impression of the memories and thoughts he was getting from
the town folk. Eventually, the family spent most of their time guarding their
thoughts about Bella as Edward lives only to hear about her death. But when
Alice had a strong intuitive feeling that they need to go back to Forks, it
sets off a chain of events that makes up the crux of the story.
Early on you learn the Bella Edward left in New Moon is a
wiser, older, maybe even a bit more jaded person. What she had to do to survive
the love of her life leaving her shaped even more than the love they shared.
With Mike, she carved out a tiny slice of a life. It’s by no means perfect or
even blissfully happy. Instead, in my opinion, you get that weird feeling in
the pit of your stomach that Bella settled, but she doesn’t realize it yet. As
much as she tries to tell herself that she is healed from Edward leaving, she
still holds deep scars that never healed. They still throb along the edges,
possibly being the only thing to make her feel alive.
When she realizes that the Cullens are back in town, the
scars are ripped open and every raw emotion and memory she suppressed comes
flooding back. But unlike many fics in this story genre, their reconciliation
doesn’t come with a crooked smirk or a declaration of love. No, Bled Dry makes
both of them work toward at least understanding what happened that night ten
years ago. Bella is too entrenched in her life with Mike to just come bounding
back into Edward’s arms. That type of realism is what kept me hooked on
reading. I hate when Bella just accepts him back with a few well spoken words.
Ten years is a lot of time to overcome for that type of reunion to happen.
But as much as this is a story about Bella and what happened
to her after Edward, it’s also a story about Edward’s chance at redemption, not
only with Bella, but his family and with himself. While Edward may be forever
frozen at 17, he comes back to Bella as a man, one who has lost the sense of
superiority and has learned the hard lesson of humility. While it’s believed
that vampires are unchangeable, you realize that Edward’s pain at losing his
mate changed him as much as her love for him set him free.
The following chapters play out the dance between Bella and
Edward. Their love for each other is evident, a tangible thing that hangs above
their heads. But to even get to that point of acknowledging it, they have years
of pain, sadness, and anger to get through. But more than that, there are things
in Bella’s life that she can no longer ignore when it comes to her life and
marriage. While Bella figures out her own stuff, Edward needs to learn how to
relate to this new Bella. He needs to reconcile the younger version with the
one that stands before him.
The journey the author takes not only them but the reader is
one where you’ll be crying, laughing and cheering. Grab a blanket, a box of
Kleenex and a stress ball and strap yourself in for an amazing ride. I promise
you won’t
be disappointed.
WitchyVampireGirl presents Elf by texasbella
Since the holiday season is upon us, I thought I’d share of
my favorite Holiday stories—Elf by texasbella. It was a one shot that was
written due to a challenge for a smutty, but yet still Christmassy story. The
one shot was really well received and many readers asked her to continue it.
Why are you looking at me? I didn’t beg that much! *laughs*
It opens with a Bella really having a shitty year and trying
her best to lift her spirits while she bakes a bakery’s worth of goodies to
bring to a local shelter. While there she stays to help and spies a man that
she is instantly attracted to but assumes by his rather casual clothes, he is a
guest at the shelter. When he meets her at the end of the day, he asks if he
can follow her home and we learn he is Edward and he is a physician that
attends to the shelter clients.
Ohh, did I mention that Edward is British? Yeah … I know, sexy
as hell!
What follows is a sexy little adventure with Bella and
Edward. I will warn that there are soft-core BDSM themes in the original one
shot and the continuation story. If it’s a hard limit, I’ll understand. If it’s
not, keep reading.
Once at Bella’s place, Sir Edward (did you see the play on
words? Lol) comes up and things heat up. There is a little
light spanking and a little bondage and, well, one sexy ride. The one
shot ends with a sleepy and well-used Bella waking up to a wrapped present and
an offer that she can’t turn down, more of Edward.
In the expanded story, we get EPOV from the moment he sees
Bella and his instant attraction to her as well. His excitement over her and
the ability to exercise the Domly side of him has Edward in the Christmas
spirit. The chapters are short, fluffy and full of smexy goodness. It is sure
to get anyone in the mood, a Holiday mood! Gee whiz, keep your mind out of the
gutter will you?
The author does a wonderful job crafting a full, carefree story
that doesn’t overdo it on the smut, and gives you a sense that you know these
characters. Her smut is written full of description and sexiness that will
leave you a little breathless and wanting more.
If you need a pick me up from the Holiday blues, give this
short but sweet story a go.
Until next time, look for the magic in everyday life and I
wish you a wonderful holiday season!
We'll see you back in two weeks for the first Fabulous Fic Rec Friday of 2015. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
