Fan Fiction Friday

Story Review: Expectations and Other Moving Pieces by chrometurtle

Summary: Everything I had done in my life seemed to lead up to this moment. The moment when I found myself bound inextricably to a man I didn't love, trapped in a life I didn't want. And if I left him, I would be entirely alone.

"What the hell is going on, Edward?"

There was a slight pause and a shuddered intake of breath. "I don't know."

He was crying.

Alice's voice was slightly harder when she replied, "Not good enough."

There was a long silence that followed. I could feel the tension in the air as Alice demanded the same
answers out of Edward that she wouldn't force out of me.

At last, I heard Edward's voice again. "We're not who you think we are."

Alice laughed sarcastically, quietly. "So I gathered."

Edward's whisper continued as if he hadn't heard her. "We're just…" He paused, sounding as though
he was at a loss.

"Broken?" Alice supplied, using my words.

"Yes," Edward breathed.

"That's what Bella kept saying when she got here," Alice told him. "Shivering cold, wet, feet
bleeding, a few minutes away from hypothermia and she was defending you."

Edward didn't respond.

I wanted to look at his face, but I knew it was too dark. And I was afraid to move, afraid to let them
know I was awake.

I wasn't positive that I was.

"Edward," Alice whispered firmly when she realized he wasn't going to answer her. "What happened
between you two?"

I could see him smiling above me, one of his hands reaching up to run his fingers through my hair. I
shuddered in pleasure.

"I'm disgusting."

...

Chrometurtle wastes no time jumping right into the angst with this story. In the first chapter we get a glimpse at the relationship - or lack of - between Edward and Bella, a married couple residing in New York City. Edward is controlling and demanding, and though Bella tries her best to be defiant, she just can't find it in herself to do so, at least not when the story starts off.

After hauling them both across the country to Colorado for his father's funeral, Edward takes a job at the local hospital and makes the executive decision to relocate he and Bella to the barren town he grew up in.On the outside, this couple has worked hard to erect the facade of a happy marriage. Behind closed doors things are different: Bella is left to sleep in a cold room with no heat, Edward fails to communicate with anyone outside of his family, and as the days go by, each of them seem to fall further and further into his and her own form of depression.

Enter Alice and Jasper, the couple's neighbors. Alice has a love for horses and Jasper owns his own construction company. Bella winds up on their doorstep one night after an unpleasant verbal altercation with Edward, and a friendship starts to blossom. As Alice and Bella grow closer, Bella's relationship with her husband starts to morph as well, and at times one can almost see small glints of sunshine poking between the relentless clouds of angst that overshadow this piece.

In addition to watching the present-day story unfold, Chrometurtle weaves Bella and Edward's back story into the story as well. Without giving away any more spoilers than I have already, Bella wasn't always with Edward, and the way she came to be with him isn't anything like the fairy tale we've all become accustomed to.

Angst happens to be my favorite genre of fic to read, so you can imagine how eager I was to take this piece on after seeing others comment on how it was too painful for them to continue. This story is painful, I'm not going to lie, but not in a gut wrenching, heart squeezing kind of way. It's more of a dull, pressing ache, a sadness and a pity for these people who are clearly hurting, clearly lacking love, and who just can't seem to find the pieces to put together to get things right. I'm not saying this is an easy read by any means, because it isn't. There were many times when I wanted to punch my laptop and walk away because I was so frustrated with the way things were going (especially with Edward). Chrometurtle has a way of keeping her readers hooked, however. Perhaps it's with her beautiful words or descriptive writing style. Either way, I couldn't not forge ahead, and now I find myself eagerly awaiting the next update (which I hope will come soon).

Chrometurtle does an incredible job of painting a picture with her words. This story is a work in progress, and throughout the posted chapters I felt like I was watching a movie while reading. Her characters develop at the perfect pace, and each one of them is humanistic and relatable in their own way. The struggles they face, in their individual lives as well as in the various relationships, are struggles that you or I or anyone could easily face, and this helps to build a piece of fiction that is amazingly creative yet grounded firmly in reality.

Fandom Event: Fandom Fights Hurricane Sandy Compilation

As many of you recall, a large portion of the East Coast of the USA was rocked when Hurricane Sandy roared through merely a month ago. Over 100 lives were lost, and thousands more people lost their homes and were without power after the devastating storm rolled through.

In typical fandom fashion, a fan fiction compilation was organized within days of the storm's wrath. The Fandom Fights Hurricane Sandy compilation will feature pieces of writing from over 50 authors (tentatively) writing for various fandoms. To get the compilation, you have to make a minimum donation of $10 to the Red Cross. Once this is done, email your receipt to fandomfightssandy@gmail.com and you will receive a copy of the compilation. You have until January 15, 2013 to donate and get your receipt in. Stories will be posted publicly on January 16, 2013.

Fan Fiction Friday

Happy Friday ... er, Saturday Rob fans!

My schedule has been rather unforgiving for the past few months, but as things are starting to level out I'm happy to say I'll be back every Friday with a new Fan Fiction Friday post! Things are going to be a little different in the future, so here's an overview of what to expect:

Story Recommendations - Once a month I'll feature lists of stories from different genres that I and a few of my fellow fan fic writers and readers in the fandom are currently in love with. Eventually I hope to have a full-blown list compiled to suit the fan fic needs of all of our readers!

Story Reviews - Each week I'll feature a review of a different story. I hate to give away spoilers, hence the reason I've kept this column short and sweet in the past, but moving forward you'll see reviews that are longer and contain more detail.

Author Spotlights - Each month RobNation will shine the spotlight on one author from the fandom, and will feature a short interview.

Featured Events - I'll be highlighting different events taking place in the fandom world, such as compilations, fundraisers, awards, meetups, and more.

Today's Fan Fiction Friday focus will be on the most recent round of awards in the Twilight fandom - The first annual Fandom Choice Awards, hosted by the wonderful gals over at Tricky Raven.

What are the Fandom Choice Awards? Coinciding with the People's Choice Awards, the FCAs are designed to give members of the Twilight fandom a chance to show their appreciation for their favorite fic authors, stories, betas, pre-readers, banner makers, and more!

Nominations took place in November, and now that December has arrived, voting is open. The FCAs have two categories: The Cullen Family (containing nominees who write primarily about the vampire characters from the saga) and The Quileute Wolfpack (containing nominees who write primarily about the wolfpack characters from the saga).

Visit this page to vote for The Cullen Family nominees and this page to vote for The Quileute Wolfpack nominees.Voting will remain open from now through January 3, 2013.

One unique twist these awards have to offer is that the results will be posted live on January 9, 2013 while the People's Choice Awards air.

If you've ever read a piece of Twilight fanfic, I recommend heading over and checking out the nominees for both sides of the fandom. While you're there, show your appreciation and vote for your favorites!

Fan Fiction Friday

Today's Fan Fiction Friday feature is Expectations and Other Moving Pieces by chrometurtle.

This story is, in one word, painful. Edward and Bella are in their late 20s, have been married for a short number of years, and reside in New York City. The circumstances surrounding their marriage aren't very clear, but shortly after the story begins the duo commutes to Colorado (where Edward's family resides) to a funeral. Secondary characters receive an introduction at that time, and after a few chapters it becomes very clear that these two are miserable together. They put on a show for those on the outside, but when it's just the two of them alone in Edward's parent's farmhouse, long periods of silence punctuated by shouting and tears comprise their union.

Chrometurtle does an incredible job of sucking the reader in and getting them to feel all of the emotions that the characters in this story express. The situations the characters encounter are realistic, and as the story unfolds, readers get a very clear presentation of why everyone is the way they are.

There's no guarantee of a happily ever after with this one, but for those who enjoy angst and don't mind shedding a tear (or a hundred), this is an amazing read. The story is a work in progress, so it will continue to unfold as time goes on.

Head on over and check the story out! Don't forget to show the author some love by leaving a review!

Fan Fiction Friday

Today's Fan Fiction Friday feature is Summer of Salt by lola-pops.

I don't even know where to start when describing this story. Our favorite characters are all college-aged in this fic. Bella, Jasper, and Rosalie are cousins who get to spend their summers hanging out in their family lake houses. A new family moves to their lakeside heaven, a visitor arrives from out of town, and bam! - the makings of a fun-filled, wild, and angsty summer are upon them.

With this fic, Lola creates a cast of characters who are impossible not to fall in love with - even when they're behaving in less-than perfect ways. Of course there's a reason it falls under the angst category, and that's because much like real life, nothing comes free or easy for this group, and some people have to endure a bit of heartache before finding the golden-lined path to head down.

I could spend the rest of my night singing this fic praises, but instead I'll simply encourage you head over and read it yourself. You might be frustrated at times, you might find yourself wanting to cry, and you'll definitely laugh until there are tears in your eyes, but I promise it's so worth it.

Be sure to leave Lola some love in the form of reviews while you're reading! You can also find her on Twitter

Fan Fiction Friday

Today's Fan Fiction Friday feature is The Proposal by shadowed by passion.

The Proposal is ... well, it's a different (in a good way) and humorous take on your favorite Twilight characters. Admittedly I'm only a few chapters into this fic, but I've already gotten a fair share of laughs, mostly at Edward's expense. The hot shot executive is referred to as a "hand humper" in the story's summary starts out as quite the asshole, but, his facade is quickly blown to pieces as his assistant, Bella, starts to get glimpses of him at his not-so-fine moments. Like when she first catches him humping his hand ...

This fic has a good combination of sentimentality and humor, and of course some citrusy goodness included for your reading enjoyment.

Check out The Proposal and be sure to leave shadowed by passion some love in the form of reviews. You can also follow the author on Twitter.

*The Proposal is a work in progress that contains some graphic sexual content. This content is suitable for mature audiences only.

Fan Fiction Friday

TGIF my fellow Rob fans! I'm here to provide the weekly fan fiction recommendation.

Today's featured Fan Fiction Friday story is A Pound of Flesh by jaxon22. I'm trying to think of how I would go about describing this story in three words ... 1. Sexy, 2. Mindblowing, and 3. Teasing.

Edward stars as a bad boy prison inmate in this fic, and Bella is the good girl put in charge of reforming him. There is an undeniable attraction between the two opposites from the very start, and the tension only continues to build as the story progresses. Jaxon22 has taken two of our favorite Twilight characters and morphed them into multidimensional people who do this intoxicating dance with one another from chapter to chapter. Of course the other characters are incorporated and crafted equally well, putting this story at the top of my personal favorites list.

PAW (aka PunkAssWard) will own you by the time you get done reading.

Check out A Pound of Flesh and be sure to leave jaxon22 some love in the form of reviews. You can also follow the author on Twitter.

Fan Fiction Friday

Hello loves! Happy Friday! :)

Today's Fan Fiction Friday featured story is Dusty by YellowBella. This is a collaboration between one of my favorite fic authors, TeamBella23, and another amazing writer, YellowGlue.

I have to admit, I'm only about three chapters into this story, but I'm totally freaking hooked! It starts out with the characters in their childhood, I believe they're 11 and 12 years old at the time. These two writers have completely altered the Twi character's physical characteristics and personalities, which was one of the things that lured me into reading more of the story. For example, Alice is a tomboy, which I might love even more than her canon personality!

This is an angsty fic, Bella is sweet and innocent (thus far), Edward is older and "cooler" in his mind, and I'm gathering he isn't going to be so sweet or innocent as the story progresses.

Click on the banner below to check out Dusty. Make sure you leave Yellow
Bella some love in the form of reviews!

There is also a blog for Dusty here and a Facebook group for it here!

Fan Fiction Friday

Hello hello to my lovely fellow Rob fans! Happy Friday to you all!

Today's Fan Fiction Friday piece is Pocket Full of Stones by 107yearoldvirgin.

Pocket Full of Stones is what we call a one-shot piece in the FFn world (i.e. - one chapter only). 107yearoldvirgin uses canon characters with Edward and Bella, and there is romance in this beautifully written piece. There's also a supernatural element, which is what really pulled me in after I started reading.

I don't want to give too much away, but I will say that the ending will probably surprise everyone just as much as it surprised me.

Head over, check out Pocket Full of Stones, and leave 107yearoldvirgin some love in the form of reviews!

Fan Fiction Friday

Hello hello! Happy Friday to all! Hooray for the arrival of the weekend! :)

This week's Fan Fiction Friday feature is Take What You Want by purelyamuse.

I fell in love with this story by the end of the first chapter. Why, you ask? The answer is very simple - DirtyFlirtWard. Yes, that's right, he's DirtyFlirtWard in this fic and you know what? I freaking love him.

The story is set in high school, Edward is FAR from perfect, Bella can't resist his charms (can any of us ladies ever?), and, well ... the story moves on from there. It's cute, there's a bit of angst, plenty of fluff, and a LOT of humor from all different directions. I also love how the author integrated the other characters too.

Check out the story and share your thoughts with purelyamuse and other readers!

Fan Fiction Friday

Greetings all!

Apologies for the absence of Fan Fiction Friday last week! FanFiction.net was down and as a result I couldn't get anything up here!

Today's featured story comes from Esme Mom Cullen!

The Esme Chronicles: The Vampire Years is an incredibly unique fan fiction piece. So many stories focus on Edward & Bella (I fully admit, I'm a fan of that pairing more than any when it comes to my reading as well), but this story focuses entirely on Esme's experience after becoming a vampire.

The Esme Chronicles takes readers on an amazing journey beginning shortly after Esme's transformation and continuing as she develops a loving relationship with Carlisle and comes to love Edward like a son.

Head on over to FanFiction.net to read The Esme Chronicles. Make sure you leave EMC some love in the form of reviews! She also has several other pieces that equally wonderful for readers to enjoy! You can also follow her on Twitter!

Fan Fiction Friday

Hello again! TGIF ladies & gents! :)

Today's Fan Fiction Friday featured author is Kiva Johns Adkins.

Kiva has a unique spin she's put on fan fiction - rather than going with all new stories, Kiva has re-created the Twilight Saga from Edward's POV, beginning with her Continuation of Midnight Sun. Kiva has also written Black Moon, Edward's POV of New Moon, and Shroud, her work-in-progress which is Edward's POV of Eclipse.

Kiva has some other one-shot pieces up for readers to enjoy as well!

I couldn't pick just one story from this author, so I had to highlight them all! Check her work out, I promise you don't be disappointed. And make sure to leave her some love in the form of reviews while you're there -- tell her Nikki from RobNation sent ya! ;)

Fan Fiction Friday

I'm a day late again, I know. Feel free to smack me around a little. I've never been good with punctuality.

Today's story comes from MariahajilE!

The War is Over is a Twilight-themed fan fiction piece. It's a bit different than most that I've posted thus far, because quite frankly, it isn't all smiles and rainbows and happy endings here and there. It's hard core. It's drama-ridden. It's sad. It's not for the faint of heart.

TWIO centers on two character pairings - Edward & Bella and Edward & Angela - and involves cheating, lying, deception, and of course, love. Iris is an amazingly talented writer, and within the first few chapters of this drabble, readers are hooked.

I've never read a fic that had me craving a daily update in quite the way this one does. It's almost like a drug in the form of words. Each chapter elicits so many emotions in me (and other readers who have reviewed), and makes me want to both love and hate the antagonist character(s).

Head on over to FanFiction.net to read TWIO. Don't forget to leave Iris some love in the form of reviews. You can also visit her blog for more info on the story and you can follow her on Twitter!

Fan Fiction Friday

Today's story comes from jayhawkbb!

An Undefined Affair is a Twilight themed fan fiction piece focused on the interactions between Edward and Bella.

A little overview - Edward is a corporate executive and Bella works for an ad agency that's trying to woo the company Edward works for into signing as an account. The two meet, a steamy night ensures, and a delightful agreement is made that takes them both on a roller coaster ride of self-discovery.

Chapters are lengthy, the story is a work in progress, and updates are done every few weeks to months from what I've gathered. It's a wonderful read that has a good mixture of fluff, lemony goodness, angst, and a little bit of painful drama.

Check the story out and leave jayhawkbb some reviews!

Fan Fiction Friday

Today's story comes from orrington.rose!

Blessed are the Forgetful is a Twilight crossover fic, interwoven with the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

I will go ahead right now and say that this story isn't all sunshine and lollipops. There's plenty of angst, hurt, and heavy themes, but it's beautifully written and it's a wonderful story. The story focuses around Bella's unrequited love for Edward and what happens in the aftermath of the end of their relationship.

The story is written in very short chapters, as it was updated daily, but they flow together perfectly and are quite easy to read.

Blessed are the Forgetful is rated M, meaning mature themes and content. You've been warned.

Check the story out and leave orrington.rose some love in the form of reviews!

Fan Fiction Friday (er ... Saturday)

Greetings all!

I'm a day late (and more than a dollar short, lol), but here's this week's featured fan fiction piece:

Today's story comes from ciaobella27.

Ciaobella27's story, Living Backwards, is a Twilight-inspired fan fiction piece. The story involves some time travel (not the sci-fi, teleportation kind or anything of that nature ... you'll have to read to find out), a rebellious Edward, a liquor loving Bella who totes around a pink flask named Joan, and the usual suspects in a delightful cast of characters.

There's humor, romance, a wee bit of angst, and just the right amount of lemony goodness in this piece! It held my attention from the very beginning and I couldn't stop reading once I got going. I won't give too much away, but I will say it made me think about what I would and wouldn't want to change if I could go back to my high school days. ;)

Check out the story and let ciaobella27 know what you think!

Fan Fiction Friday

Hello loves!

Today marks the first official Fan Fiction Friday here on our new site! This will be a weekly column where I share with you some of my favorite fan fiction pieces that stem from different projects Rob has been involved.

Today's fan fic comes from one of my good friends, the lovely and talented Chloe Masen (aka @melarimo on Twitter).

Chloe's story, Come Closer, is a Twilight inspired fan fiction piece that focuses on Edward and Bella. Edward is a bit older, Bella is a Hale (surprise!), and there's a whole lot of pent up frustration between these two. Of course, the question is, what direction will this friendship go in ... And who will be the first one to cave?

Come Closer is rated M (mature) and is not suitable for younger viewers.

Check the story out and let Chloe know what you think!

You can also check out Chloe's original fiction work here at the Writer's Coffee Shop.

Fan Fiction Friday ... er, Saturday

I promise in the future this really will be posted on Friday. My brain had a lapse last night! :)

Robnation.org will now feature a Fan Fiction Friday posting each week. These posts are designed to introduce all you wonderful Rob fans to fan fiction pieces based off of the films Rob has stared in. If you've never had a chance to read fan fiction, I highly recommend giving it a look, a lot of it is quality writing and gives the reader an alternate look at the story (which is sometimes better than the actual story!).

This week's selected fan fiction is Controlled Burn.

Controlled Burn is a Twilight fan fiction piece. The story has a few interesting features: Bella is older than Edward, has her first encounter with a Cullen takes place during a study abroad session for college, and the vamps ... well, from what I've gathered, they aren't necessarily vamps. (Keep in mind that I'm only 7 chapters in so I'm not sure exactly where it's going to go.) The story is well-written, the characters personalities are wonderful (especially Bella and Edward), and the way the author incorporates second and third level characters is unique.

Feel free to comment and share your thoughts on the story! When you start reading, make sure you pay close attention - In two weeks on August 19 we're going to have a trivia contest on the first 15 chapters of the story that will provide all of you with a chance to win some exciting prizes!

Got any fan fiction pieces you'd like to see featured on the site? Are you a fan fiction writer with a piece that relates to Rob and one of his projects? Email your ideas to Nikki!
